July 4th: Secession and Independence Day?
  by Craig Read

As predicted the great man the Obamed, the multi-cultural Marxist Prophet of hope and change; is a colossal disaster. Worse than Jimmy Carter; more muddled than Al Gore; a bigger liar than Bill Clinton, the great man's support base is now his family, Blacks [but of course race is not the issue]; illegals, Muslims, and the few union-government-trail lawyers-Hollyweirder die-hards who still drink the kool-aid and watch Oprah. These people would support the Black God even if his middle name was Lenin in place of Hussein.

America was founded on the premise that arbitrary, non-transparent despotism was against the natural law rights of men. Life, liberty, property and the pursuit of happiness could only be achieved under a constitutional division of powers, encased in a system of some form of representative democracy. This is as true today as it was in 1776. Obamed is shredding the Constitution, arrogantly ignoring the will of the people and behaving as if he were a new King George III. As Rich Lowry posted, populations have a right and a mandate, elucidated by the great 17th political philosopher John Locke, to overthrow tyrannies:

These Lockean premises were so widely accepted among revolutionary leaders that the preamble — which has never lost its power to awe and to command the reader’s assent — was adopted by the Continental Congress with nary a peep of protest. “Neither aiming at originality of principles or sentiments,” Jefferson later wrote of the Declaration, “it was intended to be an expression of the American mind.”

It expressed our mind, though not our practice, most obviously when it came to the disgrace of slavery. Yet the Declaration has served over time as an acid test of freedom; it has exposed our failures to live up to truths we pronounced “self-evident.” In the 19th century, apologists for slavery felt compelled to dismiss the Declaration as a “glittering generality.” It was Abraham Lincoln, the great vindicator of freedom, who boasted, “I have never had a feeling politically that did not spring from the sentiments embodied in the Declaration of Independence.”

Jefferson and Lincoln have much to offer the modern world. The former was suspicious of concentrations of capital and political power. The latter understood that the barbarous regime of Southern slavery had to be destroyed by the civilized march of Northern industry, progress and culture. Both knew that the US Constitution is the only device in man's history which promotes the individual at the expense of a centralizing power and protects the weak against the avarice and predations of the strong and politically connected. America needs to reject the Kingly pretensions of the cultural Marxists such as the Obamed, and return to the philosophy and ideals of Jefferson and Lincoln.

Currently we can witness – yet again – the destruction wrought by a 'Great Man' and his cult. The Obamed's failed governance has however, generated two positive outcomes. The first is that real conservatism, of the non-GOP variety, is currently in full flower. The sea-change in US politics back to what made America great might now be in train.

The second positive result is the obvious fact that that seceding from a corrupt national government is being discussed. The growth of the US Federal government, which in 2 years will consume 30% of US total national income, is nothing less than Marxist-Socialist tyranny and one which either must be overthrown via the electoral process, or destroyed via secession. State's such as Texas and others need to consider withdrawing from the Dis-United union. The rights of the people, and of the state's must triumph over that of a despotic Federal Government.

As Churchill once commented, the best things in life are usually the simplest, expressed by the shortest of words. When you have leviathan governments, composed of many layers, engaged in transferring monies from taxpayers in a bewildering system, and in ways which are not transparent, destructive outcomes result. Corruption, fraud, graft, welfare dependency, political preferences, housing finance distortions, bizarre laws, statutes and over time unfettered police and state power; are only some of the vile results of malignant statism. The more levels of government, combined with ever more bureaucrats and politicians, the worse, more opaque and tyrannical the general society becomes.

Revolt, secession and even civil disobedience will be America's future unless the principles of Jefferson and Lincoln are re-established.

Thomas DiLorenza a professor at Loyola college quoted Jefferson in a recent article, on the right to revolt, when tyranny was clearly being imposed:

Jefferson made numerous statements in defense of the defining principal of the American Revolution: the right of secession. In a January 29, 1804 letter to Dr. Joseph Priestly he wrote:

Whether we remain in one confederacy, or form into Atlantic and Mississippi confederacies, I believe not very important to the happiness of either part. Those of the western confederacy will be as much our children & descendants as those of the eastern, and I feel myself as much identified with that country, in future time, as with this; and did I now foresee a separation [i.e., secession] at some future day, yet I should feel the duty & the desire to promote the western interests as zealously as the eastern, doing all the good for both portions of our future family which should fall within my power.

In an August 12, 1803 letter to John C. Breckinridge Jefferson addressed the same issue, in light of the New England Federalists’ secession movement in response to his Louisiana Purchase. If there were a "separation" into two confederacies, he wrote, "God bless them both, & keep them in the union if it be for their good, but separate them, if it be better."

Historically it is clear that when tyranny runs rampant, usually only war can salvage freedom. America is unique, but the experiment is being destroyed by the rise of statism, itself an 80 year process of regressive, immoderate accumulations of power by government. Keynes was wrong. Government is not a 'G' in some benign and abstract economic model. The G is an actor desirous of power, control and the micromanagement of people, preferably arranged inside a communal cult.

Steyn wrote – somewhat incorrectly – that part of America's distinctiveness is that the US is history's first and only superpower which is not an outright imperialism, and which actually supports institutions which constrain its power. This is partially correct. The US through various wars did append territories to its imperial holdings including Hawaii, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico. But his comment is correct in that the key issue is of course 'Independence' of a state in an anarchic world. What are the key elements of being a truly independent and prosperous state? The answers lies of course in America, not in Europe:

But America is also an historical anomaly: the first non-imperial superpower. It has no colonies and no desire for any. For almost 60 years, it’s paid for the defence of the west virtually single-handed while creating and supporting structures – the UN, Nato, G8 – that exist only to allow its “allies” to pretend they’re on an equal footing. For “allies”, read dependencies: it’s because the US provides generous charity defence guarantees that the European governments have been free to fritter away their revenues on socialised health care and lavish welfare and all the other entitlements the Euro-progressives berate America for not providing for its own citizens. The non-arrogance of Washington is unparalleled in human history: it’s American muscle that tames Bosnia but it’s the risibly pompous Paddy Ashdown who gets to swank about the joint playing EU viceroy.

America is exceptional. The 2/3 Black Jesus and Most Important Man in History, does not believe it however. The Obamed famously quipped that America is as exceptional as Greece. In other words, each state feels that they are 'the best', or possess some 'legacy' which is unique. This is true but so what? Objectively there are certain, clear and simple rules of culture, political-economy and military preparedness which will allow states to develop, and which determine the course of history and the creation of the modern world. Greece is no longer exceptional, except in its Marxist fascination and path to bankruptcy, something it shares with the rest of Europe.

In the run-up to the 2003 Iraq War, there were interminable UN debates; not to mention 17 resolutions condemning the transgressions by Iraq of UN sanctions and 'law' [but remember the really smart people say that all 'war' is illegal]. During these discussions French foreign minister Villepin, whined that France was a 'very old country' steeped in wisdom. Not really. France as a representative democracy is less than 150 years old, and in reality is just another tired, bankrupted socialist state, pursuing the dead-ends of Marxist theology. The default organization of France has been dictatorship, Kingship and gang-rule. These are hardly political-economic structures which enliven the lives of the peasants or drive general prosperity to new heights.

America is totally different than France or Europe. The Declaration of Independence makes this obvious as does the American creation of much of what is the modern world and its infrastructure, appliances and opportunities. The Black Jesus is trying to turn the USA into Sweden. He will fail. Even if he doesn't the right to secede from tyranny is clearly expressed in the works of America's founding fathers, its foundational texts, and its revolution against British despotism. We might yet see a second American revolution and that would not be a bad thing at all.
